The GCA Interchange Fellowship and RHS McLaren Horticultural Scholarship – 2011 – 2012 – Horticulture and Related Fields – The Garden Field Of America – USA
Scholarship Introduction:
Financial sponsorship in the United Kingdom was first provided by Fisons Corporation, then from 1973 to 1982 by the Stanley Smith Horticultural Foundation, and from 1982 to 1983 by the McLaren Trust. In 1988, Mrs. McLaren provided funding of the fellowship to be named the Martin McLaren Scholarship in memory of her husband. Mrs. McLaren provided funding, guidance, and personal hospitality to students. The American recipient became known as the Martin McLaren Scholar. In 2006, the McLaren Trust partnered with the Royal Horticultural Society to support the scholarship and the administration transferred from the Institute of Horticulture to the RHS Wisley. The GCA Interchange Fellowship & Martin McLaren Scholarship name was changed in 2009 to the GCA Interchange Fellowship/RHS McLaren Horticultural Scholarship.For one American scholar (McLaren Scholar) annually, 8500 British pounds for ten months of enrichment study under the auspices of the Royal Horticultural Society. The McLaren Trust and the RHS cover the cost of transportation, tuition, housing, board, and an allowance for personal needs during the American student’s academic year in Great Britain. The GCA makes travel arrangements to the U.K. Any additional funds for personal expenses exceeding the allowance are supplied by the candidate.For one British scholar (Interchange Fellow) annually, up to $30,000 USD. The GCA covers the cost of tuition, university or equivalent housing, meal plan, and university health plan, as well as $750 per semester for books and study materials, and $300 per month for personal incidentals and travel expenses to selected GCA meetings. Scholarship Introduction:
This to encourage students to pursue careers in conservation by providing hands-on field training experience protecting the treasured resources of America’s National Parks. The scholarship will allow the Student Conservation Association to expand its apprentice crew leader program from urban parks into America’s National Parks.Established in 2010, the scholarship is a tribute to Sara “Sally” Shallenberger Brown. It was created to showcase Ms. Brown’s dedication to the environment and ensure that her legacy will continue in perpetuity. Scholarship Introduction:
Following a Zone Meeting hosted by her garden club, the Monroe (Louisiana) Garden Study League, Caroline Brown (Mrs. Douglas C.) expressed her interest in funding a summer scholarship in the field of medicinal botany. With the help of Dr. James Miller from the Missouri Botanical Garden, the GCA Scholarship Committee proposed a summer scholarship to include field study, laboratory study, or special coursework in medicinal botany. The fund was originally called the Caroline Brown Fund but Mrs. Brown preferred to call it the Zeller Medicinal Botany Fund to honor deceased members of her family. The scholarship was offered for the first time in 2003 for study during the summer of 2004. Caroline Brown is a member of the GCA House Committee and is responsible for Fine Arts and Acquisitions. Scholarship Introduction:
The Paul Mellon Fellowship is offered to an unmarried member of the Senior Class in Yale College for study at Clare College, Cambridge, for the coming academic year. The fellowships are normally renewed for a second year and fellowship recipients may request a third year. An Applicant must demonstrate a genuine interest in Britain or in subjects that can best be approached by study in England, must agree that in the summer following his/her first year at Clare College he/she will devote some time to travel in the British Isles or on the Continent, and will not ordinarily expect to return to the United States during that time, must have a strong academic record at Yale, must have demonstrated qualities of leadership at Yale.
