English Speaking Union/Companion Animal Society Scholarships 2010/11-Undergraduate Students-Massey University-New Zealand

Massey University offers English Speaking Union/Companion Animal Society Scholarships for Undergraduate Students for the academic year 2010/11 in New Zealand

The English Speaking Union (ESU) is a worldwide voluntary organisation for promoting international understanding. The New Zealand ESU in combination with the Victoria, Australia branch, is offering an opportunity for a veterinary student from Massey University to spend two weeks doing veterinary practical work at a busy clinic in Melbourne. The New Zealand ESU has obtained co-sponsorship from the Companion Animal Society of the NZVA for part of the costs involved. Other costs are met by the Victorian branch of the ESU.
The award is known as the ESU/NZVA Companion Animal Society Scholarship. It was awarded for the first time in 1998/9 and the recipient in 2007/8 was Ms Tania Beerens.


Eligibility:

The scholarship is open only to BVSc 4 students and can be taken up only over the Easter break of 5th year.

Application Procedure:

Award of the scholarship is decided on the basis of an essay competition and a personal statement (see below). Applications should include the following:

  • Name, address and other contact details (including a current term address and non-term contact address including phone and e-mail contact).
  • A statement (300 word minimum) as to why you think you would particularly merit the award.
  • Write a essay of not less than a 1000 words on the following topic:
  1. What do you see as the major potential changes and challenges facing companion animal veterinary practice over the next 1 or 2 decades?”
  2. Essays and applications should be typed or produced on computer printers.

Application should be submitted to:
THE SCHOLARSHIPS OFFICE,
COMMERCIAL COMPLEX, NO LATER THAN 5 PM ON 14th november, 2009.

Selection criteria:

The following will be considered in judging the essays:

  1. the quality and style of writing and overall structure of the essay.
  2. a thoughtful and creative approach to the topic.
  3. logic and reasoning in the presentation of argument.
  4. appropriate use of examples.
  5. appropriate citing and listing of any published material referred to in the essay or used in its preparation.
