PhD Project: Improving Health In Scotland
Description:
Scotland’s population has worse mental health, more chronic illness and lower life expectancy than the rest of the UK and the majority of Europe (1). It has been suggested that early death is associated with poor lifestyle choices, in particular high rates of smoking, alcohol consumption, substance abuse and poor diet (1). Consequently, there is considerable potential for tangible improvements in health outcomes in this population. Improving wellbeing and mental health are high on the policy agenda in Scotland (2). UK government policy initiatives have increased the scope of the pharmacist’s role and consequently their impact on population health outcomes (3,4). Thus community pharmacy is pioneering an ever increasing range of community based screening services, as well as health promotion and self care initiatives. Examples include, weight management programmes, smoking cessation schemes, substance misuse services, minor ailment schemes and services to improve medication use. Clearly, as the range of services expand the way in which community pharmacy operates is evolving. This study will aim to explore the facilitators and blockers to expanding access to services of this type through community pharmacy. In the first instance this study will involve a review of the existing published evidence. Subsequently exploratory qualitative research methodologies will inform quantitative survey techniques. The project will also allow the student to develop a range of transferable health research skills in a clinical environment, enhancing future career opportunities. The project will be supervised by researchers based at the Universities of Strathclyde with strong NHS and policy links.
Background:
This study will involve a systematic review, as well as a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
