This programme provides courses at university level on the most important aspects of aquaculture, for both marine and freshwater organisms. The programme takes a multidisciplinary, interuniversity and international approach, and aims at the acquisition of fundamental knowledge and skills.

The future of sustainable development is critically related to the promotion of better governance at the local, national, regional and international level. At once a cause and a consequence of governance failures, violent conflict is incompatible with sustainable development. Central in this nexus between development, governance and conflict are processes of state formation, state failure and state reconstruction. Adopting a political economy perspective, the study programme analyses governance problems and possible responses with due account of specific historical pathways of countries and the interaction between the national state level, local society level dynamics and the impact of global developments. Most of our students are engaged in development, professionally and/or as researchers. The objective of the Master’s programme is to provide them with multidisciplinary theoretical insights and practical tools that will improve their capacity to analyse governance challenges at different levels and how they relate to processes of violent conflict and development.

The Master’s in Globalisation and Development (GD) approaches the phenomenon of globalisation from an eclectic perspective, considering both the opportunities it creates and threats it poses to development and poverty alleviation in low and middle-income countries, both at the national and the local level.
Most of our students are engaged (or aspire to becoming engaged) in development policy work, professionally and/or as researchers. The objective of the Master’s is to provide them with a solid understanding of the globalisation phenomenon in its multiple dimensions (worldwide markets for goods and services, capital and labour/migration, the planetary challenge of the environment and sustainable development). It also offers them insights and tools to analyse and affect how globalisation impacts on local development and poverty alleviation in low and middle-income countries, taking due account of the complexity of local-global interactions in the multifaceted arenas of globalisation. Successful students shall be able to recognise the opportunities presented by globalisation, and to assess and remedy the risks and threats entailed.

The Master’s in Development Evaluation and Management focuses on the efforts made by a wide range of public and private actors to promote development in low-income countries. It provides a solid understanding of past and present aid policies of multilateral and bilateral donors, and of the major aid modalities and instruments deployed. The institutional characteristics of the actors involved – be they governments, community-based organisations, international NGOs, bilateral or multilateral donors – are analysed so as to attain a better understanding of processes and outcomes. The theoretical perspective is that development can be understood as a set of interlocking collective action problems, on both the recipient and the donor side. The Master’s programme offers methodological and practical insights into development evaluation, its relevance and challenges.

The programme of this Master following Bachelor is essentially structured around the following themes: basic study of non-polluted environments; sources and causes of environmental pollution; methodologies for detection and analysis of environmental pollution; prevention and abatement of environmental pollution; treatment of waste; clean technology and environmental toxicology including the methodologies for risk assessment. The compulsory courses taught during the first year cover a variety of disciplines related to environmental sciences and technologies such as ecology, environmental (micro)biology, (eco)toxicology, environmental chemistry and environmental technology/engineering. All major areas of the environment – air, water, soil, sediments and biota, including man – are dealt with. During the first year, there is also room for elective courses for at least 6 credits to be chosen from 4 modules (Management; Human Health; Advanced Technologies; Related Courses) or from other English Master programmes of Ghent University.

The objective of the programme is to provide a large degree of autonomy in the use of public health methods and the transmission of this knowledge in professional life. Fundamentals of computer science are acquired at the beginning of the course. Both basic and advanced methods in statistics and epidemiology are developed through lectures and practice. Integration with other methods is illustrated in various fields : operational research, health planning, health services research, health strategies, demography and management. Participants are trained to communicate the acquired knowledge to their colleagues, through audiovisual and computer aids.

The European Master in Microfinance is directed at students who want to obtain a specialisation in microfinance and acquire expertise by working in a developing country. It provides students with a multidisciplinary approach to the challenges facing the microfinance sector today. It offers the combined expertise of academics and experts working in the field. Academics from three leading universities and practitioners from non-governmental organisations have collaborated to launch this joint programme.
