The Department bof Microbiology offers The PhD Studentships for the year 2010/11 in Ireland
Applications are invited for a 4 year, SFI-funded PhD position , available from September 2010 in the School of Genetics and Microbiology. This exciting project will investigate the role of chromatin remodelling in the establishment and maintenance of quiescence and apoptosis using yeast stationary phase as a model system. When Saccharomyces cerevisiae is starved of glucose the cells enter stationary phase, and form two developmentally distinct populations: a quiescent population of daughter cells, and a nonquiescent population of mother cells that are programmed to undergo cell death. In this project, you will separate these populations and examine the contribution of post-translational histone modifications towards these processes. By exploiting yeast genetics, you will define the pathway of chromatin remodelling involved in the establishment of cellular quiescence and apoptosi s.

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland offers The Traveller Community Access Programme for the year 2010/11 in Ireland
RCSI recognises that not all members of our society have had the same opportunities to benefit from higher education. Students with disabilities, members of the travelling community and students from certain socio-economic backgrounds continue to experience a variety of barriers to reaching their full educational potential. RCSI is strongly committed to significantly increasing the participation rates of all these and other such groups and to the creation of a socially inclusive learning environment for all.

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland offers The PhD Programme in Health Systems Research for Africa for the year 2010/11 in Ireland
In 2000, the United Nations outlined eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to reduce global poverty by the year 2015. This Ireland Africa Partnership focuses on pro-poor research to address the Health MDGs:
- reducing child mortality
- improving maternal health;
- controlling HIV/AIDS, malaria and other infectious diseases.

PhD Studentships For Degree Holders In Biology Related Field At National University Ireland Galway
Title: molecular recognition of glycans in human disease
Studentships Background:
Variations in the carbohydrate sequence of glycans on cell surfaces are markers for several cancers and congenital and acquired diseases, including, pancreatic, breast, and liver cancer, diabetes, IgA nephropathy, Alzheimer’s. The discovery and detection of these glycans is currently hindered by the lack of appropriate reagents. In this project, we are using computational methods to guide re-engineering of carbohydrate-degrading enzymes to convert them into high-affinity receptor proteins suitable for use as glycan biosensors.
The project provides training in protein expression, engineering and biophysical characterization, using such techniques as site-directed and random mutagenesis, surface plasmon resonance and flow cytometry. The PhD student will have the opportunity to participate in the computational design of protein mutants, according to their interests and abilities, and will work closely with a team of computational chemists. No previous experience with protein expression and characterization is required. This project is funded by Science Foundation Ireland under the Principle Investigator Programme with partners at the University of Georgia, USA.

PhD Position Available For MSc Or BSc Students In Biology Related Field At NUI Galway – Ireland 2009
Position Description:
A PhD position is available in the group of Dr. Eva Szegezdi in the Department of Biochemistry in NUI, Galway to develop a novel ratiometric approach to identify decisive molecular interactions and thus predict tumour behaviour.
Position Background:
Despite the availability of genomics and proteomics and intensive investigation, the ability to predict tumour response to treatments remains limited. Our proteomic analysis of the apoptotic pathway induced by the cytokine and novel anticancer agent, TRAIL, revealed that the expression level of individual proteins only loosely correlates with TRAIL-sensitivity of tumours. On the other hand, expression ratio of various proteins showed strong correlation with TRAIL-sensitivity. The aim of this project is to assess the predictive power of a ratiometric analysis of proteomes and genomes of tumour cell behaviour. With this ratiometric analysis, ratio-fingerprints can be generated to reveal hidden gene/protein interactions and enable us to explain so far unexplainable phenotypes and cellular responses and remove barriers in our understanding of tumour behaviour. The project provides training in protein and gene expression profiling, quantitative mass spectrometry, mathematical analytical methods of proteomes as well as transcriptomes. The PhD student will have the opportunity to learn cell biology techniques, such as flow cytometry, gene overexpression and silencing and will work closely with a team of cancer biologists. This project is funded by Science Foundation Ireland under the Starting Investigator Research Grant Programme with partners at the Centre of Genetic Regulation, Barcelona, Spain.
