A&K Safari Scholarships in association with Tatler Magazine offer 3 School Leavers  a unique opportunity to experience Africa’s amazing wildlife, culture and way of life in Africa

A gap year can be a highly rewarding and character-building experience. In recognition of this, we are launching the A&K Safari Scholarship, in association with Tatler Magazine. This annual initiative will give up to three school leavers a unique opportunity to experience Africa’s amazing wildlife, culture and way of life. In line with our heritage and educational values, A&K is offering a unique gap year experience. The successful candidates will work in one of our camps in Africa for a three month period in 2011/12 where they will have the opportunity to appreciate the art of safari from camp operations to client hospitality and the subtleties of bushcraft.

Position Description:
Contribute to a dynamic academic department from as early a date as possible.
A Master’s degree is the minimum requirement although a PhD or substantial progress towards the completion of one and a record of scholarly publications is preferable.
The successful candidate should be willing to teach at all levels of the Department’s undergraduate and postgraduate programme. An interest in one or more of the following fields: comparative politics, South African politics, government and politics in Africa, would be advantageous. Candidates should have some teaching experience and be able to provide evidence of being capable of contributing actively to the vibrant research culture in the Department.

Salary: R150 000 tax free per year for two years.

Description:
The common myna Acridotheres tristis is an Asian starling that has become established in many parts of the world outside of its native range due to accidental or deliberate introductions by humans. The South African population of this species originated from captive birds that escaped in Durban in 1902. A century later, the common myna has become abundant throughout much of South Africa and is considered to pose a serious threat to indigenous biodiversity. This species as significant potential to spread further in southern Africa as populations are expanding north into Limpopo, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and west and south-west into the Free State and Eastern
Cape.
