The Nottingham University offers The PhD Studentships in Protein Crystallography for the year 2010/11 in UK
Applications are invited for the above studentship to work in the ubiquitin-proteasome field based in the new interdisciplinary Centre for Biomolecular Sciences equipped with state of the art instrumentation and benefiting from a diverse and stimulating research environment. The BBSRC funded project will investigate the structure and mechanism of a human deubiquitinating enzyme that is implicated in DNA damage repair and cervical cancer. The successful student will use a combination of structural biology techniques (X-ray crystallography, SAXS/atomic force microscopy) in conjunction with biochemical studies. The project is already well advanced and diffracting crystals are available. The group regularly visits ESRF and DIAMOND synchrotron facilities. We aim to identify interaction surfaces and understand how substrates are recognized and specificity is achieved. These structural insights will reveal fundamental principles of ubiquitin deconjugation, the molecular basis of signalling pathways implicated in disease processes and pave the way for structure based drug design.
