The Institute of Neuroscience  at The University of Newcastle offers The EPSRC PhD Studentships in in Vision Science: Illuminating Colour Constancy for the year 2010/11 in UK

The project’s aim is to understand how we see colours, and to make better colour images. It is funded by the EPSRC Information and Communication Technologies programme, and combines work at the interface between computing science, psychology, and computational vision.  We will study the colour appearance of real objects under variable illumination, making use of (a) hyper spectral imaging (b) novel illumination generation and (c) behavioural measurements. Ultimately, the project will feed into colour correction algorithms for digital images. The project involves close collaboration with Professor Graham Finlayson in Computing Sciences at University of East Anglia.

MRes/PhD Studentships 2010/11-Newcastle University-UK

The University of Newcastle offers The MRes/PhD Studentships in Mitochondrial Gene Expression in Health and Disease for the year 2010/11 in UK

Mitochondria are essential for the survival of mammalian cells. These organelles are involved in numerous critical functions including oxidative phosphorylation and the transduction of energy. It is, therefore, not surprising that mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with metabolic disorders, neurodegeneration and with the ageing process. To improve our understanding of how mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to these processes it is crucial that we increase our knowledge of the basic molecular mechanisms that dictate healthy mitochondrial gene expression.

PhD Studenships 2010/11-Geography School-UK

Posted by sakshi on March 29, 2010

The School of Geography offers PhD Studenships in Integrating morphodynamics into flood inundation models for vulnerability assessments of populations living along large monsoonal rivers for the year 2010/11 at Southampton University in UK

River flooding of communities living in the floodplains of large world rivers is predicted to increase in recent climate change scenarios. Flooding destroys crops, damages infrastructure and imposes huge economic burdens on often less developed economies, contributing to a slow growth in development. Recent international programmes have tried to support floodplain communities alongside several large world rivers with studies on bank erosion and flood inundation and assessments of population vulnerability often linked with climate change scenarios (Gupta 2008; BRAHMATWIN 2007). A fundamental flaw with current approaches to flood risk management is the lack of inclusion of channel morphodynamics in the prediction of flood inundation characteristics. In large, island braided, sand bed rivers with long duration flood regimes, morphodyanmics are likely to be one of the most important controls on the flood processes over seasonal and decadal timescales as the channel adjusts to changes in both hydrology and sediment loads. River managers, consultant and academic practitioners and regional disaster planning authorities need to better understand the role of morphodynamics in controlling the spatial and temporal pattern of flooding and the resulting population movements alongside large multichannel rivers. In addition morphological change can have a major impact on the effectiveness of flood risk management activities. For effective flood risk management it is essential, therefore, to be able to make long-term predictions of river morphology.
