Scholarship Introduction:
Financial sponsorship in the United Kingdom was first provided by Fisons Corporation, then from 1973 to 1982 by the Stanley Smith Horticultural Foundation, and from 1982 to 1983 by the McLaren Trust. In 1988, Mrs. McLaren provided funding of the fellowship to be named the Martin McLaren Scholarship in memory of her husband. Mrs. McLaren provided funding, guidance, and personal hospitality to students. The American recipient became known as the Martin McLaren Scholar. In 2006, the McLaren Trust partnered with the Royal Horticultural Society to support the scholarship and the administration transferred from the Institute of Horticulture to the RHS Wisley. The GCA Interchange Fellowship & Martin McLaren Scholarship name was changed in 2009 to the GCA Interchange Fellowship/RHS McLaren Horticultural Scholarship.For one American scholar (McLaren Scholar) annually, 8500 British pounds for ten months of enrichment study under the auspices of the Royal Horticultural Society. The McLaren Trust and the RHS cover the cost of transportation, tuition, housing, board, and an allowance for personal needs during the American student’s academic year in Great Britain. The GCA makes travel arrangements to the U.K. Any additional funds for personal expenses exceeding the allowance are supplied by the candidate.For one British scholar (Interchange Fellow) annually, up to $30,000 USD. The GCA covers the cost of tuition, university or equivalent housing, meal plan, and university health plan, as well as $750 per semester for books and study materials, and $300 per month for personal incidentals and travel expenses to selected GCA meetings.
Eligibility for scholarship:
The reciprocal scholarships are open to recent college graduates who have earned a BA or BS degree, and are for a single unaccompanied person. Applicants must be 26 or younger because of the age limit on student travel vouchers in Great Britain and Europe. Selected finalists must attend a required interview at their own expense and will be notified of the time and place.

Selection and administration is by the GCA Scholarship Committee in the United States and by a committee appointed by the Martin McLaren Trust in the United Kingdom.
