University Summer Course Grant for Canadian citizens or US Foreign Nationals pursuing full-time study at Canadian or US colleges or universities for the 2010/11 session by DAAD in German Universities in Germany
This program provides scholarships to attend a broad range of 3- to 4-week summer language courses at German universities which focus mainly on literary, cultural, political and economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany. Extensive extracurricular programs complement and reinforce the core material.
A number the University Summer Course Grants are made possible by the DAAD Alumni Association of the US, including one that is specially earmarked for an applicant in the fine arts.
Eligibility:
- Scholarships are awarded to students pursuing full-time study at Canadian or US colleges or universities. There are no restrictions as to field of study, but applicants must have attained at least Junior standing (10 full-course credits for Canadians) at the time of application.
- As a rule, applicants must be citizens of Canada or the US. Foreign nationals may be eligible to apply if they have been full-time students at an American or Canadian university for at least one year at the time of application. Applicants must have completed a minimum of four semesters of college German (or have obtained an equivalent level of language proficiency elsewhere) in order to be able to participate in group projects and follow lectures in German.
- Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their academic record and statements of projected academic and professional future. Demonstrated interest in Germany and Europe and/or the need to learn the German language for professional or academic purposes will also be taken into consideration.
- All requirements must be met by the application deadline.
How to apply:
- The application form must be completed online and you must send the application printout with your signature, your supplemental documents and materials to the DAAD New York office in duplicate (one original, one photocopy). Applications not submitted in duplicate cannot be processed.
- Please do not staple any of the application materials.
- A complete application consists of the following parts. Collate, but do not staple any of the application materials, each copy of the application should be in this order:
- Completed DAAD application form.
- Autobiographical essay in German.
- A detailed statement (in English) of approximately 500 words explaining why the applicant wants to attend a University Summer Course.
- A recommendation letter written by a professor in the applicant’s major field of study. The recommendation should not be from the same professor who evaluates the language proficiency.
- Complete, official transcripts of all post-secondary studies.
- DAAD language evaluation form (”Sprachzeugnis”).
- The language evaluation form is part of the application form and must be completed and signed by a faculty member of the German Department at the applicant’s institution or by an official of a Goethe Institute.
